About Us
Parent Support Services Society of BC is a provincial organization founded in 1974 and incorporated as a Society on January 22nd, 1976 as “British Columbia Parents In Crisis Society”. The name changed officially to Parent Support Services Society of BC on June 06, 2001. We are a federally registered charity, and can provide tax receipts for donations.
Our mission is to support the well-being of all families and children by empowering those in a parenting role through community connections, research, education, and advocacy.
50th Anniversary
As we recognize our 50th Anniversary this year, it is with great pride and gratitude that we reflect on our history of supporting and empowering families. Parent Support Services was founded in 1974, by Bill McFarland and the Vancouver Children’s Aid Society. At the time, PSS was known as Parents in Crisis, a group created to end child abuse. Since then, PSS has become a cost-effective leader in providing families with the tools they need to prevent a crisis.
Throughout our entire history, families and whole communities across the province have benefited from the generosity of our volunteer facilitators, parenting educators, funders, donors and community partners in our collective work to turn “hurt-filled households into healthy homes”.
The stories of growth, transformation and positive impacts on the lives of families, have emerged from our journey and continue to fill us with joy. Although the challenges of raising children may evolve, our unwavering commitment to supporting, empowering and uplifting parents and caregivers remains steadfast.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has been part of our journey and have helped make PSS what it is today.

Values & Guiding Principles
To realize our vision and mission we create opportunities for parents and grandparents that foster independence and personal responsibility, and by creating cost-effective and comprehensive community-based services in cooperation with public and private partners. Our staff is dedicated to providing these services with respect, compassion, and accountability, and to championing the Canadian Charter of Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
We support families and their rights in this way because we value inclusion, social justice, and collaboration. We believe that, when we work together and learn from each other, these values can transform conflict into understanding; that understanding can transform hurt-filled households into healthy homes; and that healthy families can transform unjust societies into strong communities. That is why, at PSS, our goal is to build healthy communities, one family at a time.
